Matt Paul Smith's Monthly Soul Trip #1
Matt Paul Smith is a music obsessive. If you are lucky enough to be caught in the crossfire of his daily social inbox posts, you see how much quality music (mostly soul and jazz) he is consuming on a daily basis, its imporssible to keep up. So we've turned his obsession into a monthly blog post. Also look out for his own production on our latest 'Winging 2' Lp which should be out before Xmas. Matt is an endless resource
Soul Trip Pick of the Month
Epic rework of a classic from 1969. Classic.
Brothers Of Soul - I Need Your Love - 7"
(link below to buy from the Released store)
Decembers Playlist
G.Q. - Disco Nights (Rock-Freak)
Classic from '79, great bit of disco, not played out enough in my opinion
Lenny Fontana & Shirley Lites - Fire
Lenny, coming back to the fore. Spread his love, so to speak :)
Two Funk Masters - Love Money - 12" remix 1980
Tony Williams, who left London in 1979, went to New York. Made this monster and Larry Levan smashed it. End of story.
Symbol 8 - I Thought You Wanted to Dance
A rework of a 70's belter, which did better this time, 6 years ago
Daryl Hall & John Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) [Promo Remix]
This is a song, a classic, which could so easily fucked up, and has. Pomo does a brilliant mix on this, properly respecting the original.
Clyde Alexander & Sanction - Got To Get Your Love (1980)
Harlem bomb. How many times has this sampled? Speaks for itself.
Superlover - Romance (2010)
This is not the mix I played, can't find it, but Berlin should be enough.
Eddie Roberts Music - Gutterball
I'm not sure, but I think they reside in Berlin. (Again my fave place for music). DC Dookk was of the hook.
Randa And The Soul Kingdom - Getting Down To It
6ix Toys - Voodoo People
Killer
Bileo - Lets Go
One of my all time faves. Get's played A LOT haha. Maceo Jackson on horns.
G.Q. - Is It Cool
Just to bookend it.
Weiss - My Sister (2015)
Dark, and fucking brilliant
Mood II Swing - Do It Your Way (1996)
Now, we are talking. One of the greatest pieces of house I bought in the 90's. John Ciafone amazing. I heard this live at the Manor in 1998, about 3am, and the bass (player) will live with me forever.
Danny Tenaglia - Look Ahead
The first track I ever played at the back room of the Ministry in 1995. Fairly nervous. But this production is something else. And on big system is mind blowing.
Shuya Okino - Look Ahead (Shuya Okino Re-Edit) (Still In Love EP - 2011)
I had to include this. Only saw Shuya at the Jazz Cafe last week. He doesn't leave Japan that often, but his musicality and band are unbeleivable, so tight. What a cover.
